Venereal Genital Warts
Symptoms and Causes of Venereal Warts
There are many things in life that we wish we would never have to deal with. I think at the top of that very long list is making sure that we don’t contract venereal warts. These types of warts might be painless – but they are not comfortable to have around.
Venereal warts are fleshy, soft growths that will usually show up one to two months after we have been exposed to them. The longest it might take them to appear is nine months. There are some types of venereal warts that are so small that they can only be seen during a colopscopic exam of the vagina and cervix or through a pap smear exam.
Causes Of Venereal Warts
The most common way that venereal warts are spread is through sexual intercourse with someone that has been infected and is contagious during the time that it occured. Studies show that two thirds of people who have sexual intercourse with someone who is infected will have a break out.
Venereal warts will grow easily in this area because it is moist and warm. This makes it a perfect environment for it to grow in. Women will find that pregnancy will cause many outbreaks. Also the newborn is at risk for contracting the STD while coming out of the birth canal while it is infected.
Symptoms Of Venereal Warts
A study done by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said that this STD does not show any visible symptoms in half of the woman that are infected. The outbreak will usually occur inside or on the lip of the vagina around the anus.
Some people find that anogenital warts are incredibly itchy making them very uncomfortable. Certain women will develop cervical warts that will appear as flat lesions. This type will not be seen while in the early stages.
Treatment Venereal Warts
Venereal warts can breakout in groups or will start off small on the genital tissue where it can spread quickly into large masses. These warts can be treated differently depending on their size and where they have formed.
The doctor might use a chemical that is 25% podophyllin solution and is placed to the area that is affected. After a few hours it will be washed off. Doctors will not use this treatment if the woman is pregnant because the skin will absorb it and will increase the risk of birth defects.
The smaller sized warts can removed by freezing them with liquid nitrogen or burning them with electroesiccation. Imiquimod is a 5% cream that is an interferon inducer. It helps to reduce the activity and to clear external venereal warts.
One of the rarest forms of treatment is surgery. This is a last resort for patients whose bodies will not respond well to the other treatments. Laser surgery is one of the more common types of surgeries – but it is also one of the more expensive ones.
